The Department of Animal Sciences is one of five departments at Wageningen University. It is involved in research and education related to the health and welfare of animals and people. The primary focus is on the functioning of animals, both from a curiosity perspective and in relation to the various functions animals have for people
The Department of Animal Sciences provides education and research in 3 themes:

• Animal health
• Healthy and safe nutrition
• Sustainable systems.

With these themes, the Department of Animal Sciences contributes to healthy and safe products while also focussing on animal health in sustainable systems.
Subjects that are studies are for example animal health, animal welfare, animal nutrition, animal breeding and genetics, celbiology, zoology, ecology, sustainable husbandry, epidemiology, aquaculture, fisheries and human-animal interactions.

Education

To ensure students the best possible education, the Department of Animal Sciences closely follows a wide range of scientific developments. Highly qualified teachers educate a new generation of animal scientists in fundamental knowledge and the very latest scientific insights.

Students acquire knowledge of all sectors involving animals with a function for mankind: Food production, companionship, health care, recreation and nature management. The focus within the study programmes is on both biological knowledge as well as insights into social, economic and ethical issues. Animals are studied at various levels: From gene to molecule and from animal to entire husbandry systems.
The chair groups of the Department of Animal Sciences offer education in various study programmes.
